So we all know that there was a lot to learn after they reach the Surface, and well Evie forgets like everything. I'm very cool with where Souders has taken the world in this book. We meet the devastated world, with all the creepy mutations in science and nature. It added a new thread to the book. I found a lot of the explanations and discoveries to be intriguing and working. It rocked. Lots of awesome is poured out on us. The world is creepy, the revelations are fascinating, and well it all comes back to Elysium. We all know how creepsters Elysium and Mother are. *shivers*
One comment, the pacing could have been a lot faster. If you read the synopsis it is not hard to guess what's going to happen in the end. YES we learn a lot of interesting and necessary components as we get to that point. But we also have lots of romance drama and unnecessary stuffs that I personally feel pulled away from the intriguing plot of the book. At the end I just wanted more. I wanted to know what happened after that. I don't know how I'll wait for book three!
As with Renegade, we saw a split in narration. It's still Evie and Gavin, and I liked that we still had a chance to get a good look into both their heads. I still love our main protagonists, but honestly, there were sometimes they just needed to grow up. But before I get into that, one word. Mother. I still love her villainy. We don't really see her at all this book, but we get something awesome. The last chapter in her head. Holy crap. I want more of Mother's narrative voice. I want to know all about her. Why. What. How. I love when you can get a villain like her. Mother wins all. Kudos to Souders for the chapter! Can we have a Mother novella?
Evie's in a messed up spot. I mean she had her freaking memory lost, I feel for her. It's got to suck to have so much hidden from you and to have to rely wholly on strangers. In a way she whined and complained a lot, and I wanted her to just get a backbone. However she is stuck on Gavin because she knows what her heart and her messed up brain tell her, and that's about it. Amidst all this, she's coming to her new strengths throughout the book and I'm so glad to see that she found her strength at the end of the book. So while she stumbled and struggled, she pulled through. She's gonna be a kick-butt girl in book 3! Not gonna say too much about her messed-up-ed-ness, but I found the "hallucinating" to be an interesting play as well. So yay.
As for Gavin.. I just don't know. He blew me away in Renegade. I loved him for his spunk, and forward character, that contrasted Evie so well. They worked so well, and he was so fabulous, but I'm gonna have to say he was the lowest point for me in this book. He's got Evie with him now, and she's hurting and confused. It's hard to see loved ones that way. But back off dude!
Give her space to make her OWN decisions. Be the hero all you want, and she may have lost some memories, but she still has the capabilities to make choices for herself. You are being WAY TOO OVERPROTECTIVE and stubborn. I really hope we get to see Gavin pull out of this phase and tricky spot with him and Evie in book three, so we can get a happy cute couple again.
A quick word about a certain side character that you will meet once you read it. If you have, you'll know who I'm talking about. I was scared a love triangle was coming in. I was like, "I may not be liking Gavin that much right now, but still..NO." With that said, I am so glad this character came in. I love how they end and it's so great. Evie needs this relationship in her life, and I am glad that it'll keep things going. I have a feeling So-and-so is gonna rock in book three. Also, totally saw IT coming.
Okay I think I got all my thoughts out. Way too long, but whatevs. #blabbermouth Conclusion? I did really enjoy this book. I was interested and fascinated with learning all a bout the world. I did find the characters lacking to an extent, but Revelation pulled through to be a great sequel that left me eagerly anticipating the doubtless kick-butt ending that book three will be. And the cover rocks. Let's not forget that. I almost hope the roses that keep showing up on the covers will play in somehow. Probably not though. It's just a gorgeous cover rendition.

Six weeks after her arrival on the Surface, Evelyn Winters is no closer to unlocking the memories lost in her subconscious than she was when she first came. Isolated in a strange new society, Evie has only Gavin Hunter to remind her of who she once was. After the insane ending of Renegade, I was totally pumped to continue on in this series, I loved everything about the first book, the terrifying world of Elysium, Mother and her villainous ways, Gavin and his hotness, everything. Revelations brought a very fun sequel to the table, with lots of questions, and of course....revelations. Pun intended. So let's talk about it!
But even with a clean slate, it’s easy to see that Evie doesn’t fit in on the Surface. And as her differences make her feel more and more alone, she can’t help but yearn for that place she doesn’t remember: the isolated city hidden in the depths of the ocean. Elysium. Home.
But she can’t exactly tell Gavin what she’s feeling. Not when he’s the one who helped her escape Elysium in the first place, and has the scars to prove it. Though the doctors say otherwise, Gavin believes that Evie just needs time. And if her memories don’t come back, well, maybe she’s better off not remembering her past.
But the decision may be out of their hands when Evie’s ever-elusive memories begin to collide with reality. People and images from her past appear in the most unlikely places, haunting her, provoking her…and making her seem not only strange but dangerous.
Evie and Gavin can’t wait around for her memories to return. They’ll have to journey across the Outlands of the Surface to find help, and in the end, their search may just lead them back to the place it all started…
**Please note this a sequel, and the ending of Renegade will be mentioned**

But when Gavin Hunter, a Surface Dweller, accidentally stumbles into their secluded little world, she’s forced to come to a startling realization: everything she knows is a lie.Her memories have been altered. Her mind and body aren’t under her own control. And the person she knows as Mother is a monster. Together with Gavin she plans her escape, only to learn that her own mind is a ticking time bomb... and Mother has one last secret that will destroy them all.
About A Dark Grave:
Elysium Chronicles (Book 0.5)
There is only one place forbidden to the people of Gavin's village; the island just off the shore, rumored to be haunted. Cursed. All who venture to the island disappear.
But Gavin doesn't believe in such things. He is a hunter; since his father's death, he is the only one who can provide for the family. Silly rumors of ghosts aren't going to stop him from crossing the dark waters to the island in search of fresh game...
About J.A. Souders:
J.A. Souders was born in the heartland with an overactive imagination and an overabundance of curiosity that was always getting her into trouble. She first began writing at the age of 13, when she moved to Florida and not only befriended the monsters under the bed, but created worlds for them to play together. Because she never grew up, she decided she’d put her imaginary friends to work and started writing. She still lives in the land of sunshine and palm trees with her husband and their two children.
