What is your Favorite book genre?
What are some of your favorite books in that genre?
Inky's Thoughts.....
Easy Peasy....Young Adult. Okay so maybe not. I love seriously like everything within that classifications except maybe Horror and Erotica. But seriously. I'll read it all. Paranormal Mysteries to chick-flicks. I'll read anything! But for the purposes of this NT I have chosen HISTORICAL FICTION.
What in the world do you see in that genre Inky?
EVERYTHING. I love studying history. I'm partial to English/Medical history, but I love it all! I love reading fantastical stories and adventures, tales of the past. It's fascinating. It's really fun to see how civilizations have evolved from out early ancestors. I love to see how people re-imagine those places
My Favorite Historical Novels...
-in no particular order-
Bewitching Season WHY: For one thing, this adorable novel is set inVictorian London so you'vegot this classic setting with balls, and debuts, and all the loveliness of the romantic er. But then you've got this new addition with a little fantasy twist, and some magic thrown in there. I love these kinds of books because they give you the era, plus some make-believe which is always cool by me.
The Book Thief
WHY: I absolutely Loved this novel. It had this incredibly harsh setting during WW2, but it was vivid , it was lush and it was heartbreaking. I love a good historical that can paint such an accurate story and not leave anything behind. I love a good hard book like this because it's REAL. It's the bibbidi-bobiddi-boo of the scene with a little Stepmother frowning down. It's shows real live consequences. That's what this book gave and that's what I loved.
Grave Mercy
WHY: Holy Smokes guys. This is one rocking historical novel. It's quite a tumultuous setting historic wise, and then there's this new supernatural effect. But the thing about this wasn't magic. I don't even know if you could really call it supernatural. More of a new religion I guess? But it was different. She's taken a new twist and fit it right into the goings on. I was wowed. Impressed. In love with this story. Everything was awesome.
The Scarlet Pimpernel
WHY: This book is my historical tribute to the classics. But not even that, this book is Genius! Through and through, it's an adventure that's incredibly funny and engaging without adding any out of the ordinary twists. It's the French Revolt with secret enemies and lots of intrigue! It's an amazing book and one that I loved reading and watch the movie over and over for. Truly legit.
WHY: My review isn't up yet but This. Book. Is. Amazing. I've always loved Italy and anything historical there, but this book is Pure Epic. It's got a gorgeously told setting with intrigue to creep you out and make you never want to stop reading this book. It's natural intrigue which is really the best kind I think. Not to mention hot Italian guys. If I can get a good historical with hot boys in it, I'm good for life.
Waterfall
WHY: First off, Lisa is amazing. She can take a historical setting and make it real. The way she re-creates 13th cent Italy here is by not-so-kindly shoving 21st century girls into the past. It was a JOY to experience that historical period with them. It's real, it's exciting, it's gripping it's romantic. She's got the hot boy factor as well. She's got the political games going on here, not so much intrigue but the setting is amazing, and I think this is what made me fall in love with Medieval Italy in the first place.
WHY: Same thing as Book Thief. TRUE. GRIT. This book gave it all. Holding nothing back, this is the true story. The web of lies and suspicion the backstabbing people in the courts, the Hungers Games of Power. It's vivid and shocking and just powerfully real. I loved being able to stare reality in the face and not get the glitter and romance for once. It's just incredible.

Excerpt of Morrigan
Morrigan took out a white candle and a stick of dragon blood incense, and set them up in the corner of the room. She sat cross-legged, and leaned forward to light them. No matches were necessary. No lighter either. She simply touched her finger to the end of the wick, and with an iridescent spark, the candle flickered to life. It shone at first with a bright blue flame that gradually settled into a more normal orange. It was the same with the incense—another reason why she preferred not to have an audience.
She stared into the candle for a moment, and took a few deep breaths to clear her mind of all thoughts but those of the magic she intended to perform. Danu and Dagda sat on either side of her, instantly falling into silence, as though they knew she needed her complete concentration. Their energy beside her only seemed to add to the every growing sense of power that charged the room.
Morrigan closed her eyes and began to shuffle the cards. As she did, she allowed her breathing to become more even. A silence filled the room as the rest of the mortal world fell away. Soon the only sound she heard was the light thump of her own heartbeat, echoed by the quicker, fast paced beat of the cats’ hearts. She wasn’t sure how much time passed as the cards slipped through her fingers. It might have been minutes. It might have been hours. When she allowed herself to fall into a trace, time became insubstantial, irrelevant.
The tarot cards were so old; the designs on the back were almost completely worn away. She had to shuffle gently to keep them from crumbling to pieces in her hands. Yet they held a power that she knew no newer cards could ever offer. As she shuffled them, she focused her energy into them, silently requesting to be given the answers she was seeking. She allowed the image of her mother to fill her mind. When she finally felt the cards had fallen into the order they were meant to be in, she placed the deck face down on the floor, and cut them with her right hand. Then, taking one last, calming breath, she lifted the top card from the pile. With a trembling hand, she laid it down and read it.
“Wheel of Fortune,” she said aloud.
In the center of card was a wheel. As she stared at the picture, that wheel seemed to start turning clockwise. The movements made her feel slightly dizzy. The bedroom around her became more and more surreal. The scene on the card became her reality. The figure of the sphinx that sat on top of the turning wheel looked so very real. It might have turned its head to look at her. Its lips may or may not have moved. But Morrigan swore she heard a deep, resonating voice whispering the meaning of the card into her ear. Destiny approaching. An unexpected and sudden change was coming—change that could lead to good fortune.
It was the card of fate and karma returned. It meant that she needed to be prepared—to expect the unexpected. Morrigan knew the cards were telling her something was going to happen—and soon. Her destiny, whatever it was, was about to be realized. Even if it did bring with it fortune of some kind, it still scared her to death. So much so, she considered packing up the cards right then and there. Her rational mind had every intention of doing just that. The problem was, her hands didn’t get the message her brain was sending them. Before she knew what she was doing, she had already flipped over the second card.
“The Empress,” she whispered. She exhaled deeply. “My mother.”
It was the only interpretation imaginable. Even as she said it, the pregnant woman, crowned with stars and adorned in a gown decorated with pomegranates, turned to her and smiled. No longer the vague featureless stranger that was there just a moment ago, but the same woman she had sketched earlier that day—a face that mirrored her own. It was an older version of herself, which she saw in the reflection in the nearby full length mirror, had turned chalk white.
The Empress was a symbol of maternal power—of a strong feminine influence. But could it mean…did she even dare to hope that her mother was returning? She had never allowed herself to consider such a possibility. To dwell on something so unlikely would have been too painful. But now, with just the flip of a card, she found herself daring to dream it might be so. There was only one way to find out for sure. She had to keep going with the reading.
“Six of Cups.”
The third card in the spread represented her past, and even her immediate present. The six of cups specifically symbolized childhood, and she was, technically, still a child. But she had a feeling that her childhood was about to end quite abruptly. The cups in the picture were lined up across a high, stone wall, each cup holding the memories of her past.
Her past. It was nothing but a childhood filled with longing—longings which were perhaps about to be fulfilled. She visualized herself taking each cup down from the wall, and pouring the troubling memories away. It was time to start fresh. A new world was about to open up for her. She had known it as soon as she had seen the image of her mother’s face. But what would that world be like? What was waiting for her in the future?
Morrigan turned over the fourth card.
“The Knight of Wands.”
The man on the horse carrying the staff had her baffled. Not because she didn’t know its normal meaning, but because as she stared at the card, it began to take on the physical attributes of the knight in her drawings. He had the same long dreadlocks, the same bewitching stare, even the same cocky smile. It was not at all the blank face that was nearly worn away from time that should been staring back at her. Yet, the familiarity did not cancel out the meaning of the card. The knight of wands was representative of a dark man filled with a kind of honey-tongued charm. He was also fiery and arrogant, a man with a definite possibility of a dark side. If the knight of wands was coming into her life, she knew she needed to proceed with caution.
She thought she was done with the fourth card, and was preparing to move on to the next, when once again, she found she had lost control of her own body. This time, her hands refused to move, while her eyes forced their way back to the knight in the card. She watched as the longhaired stranger began to move forward—wondering over various landscapes—some high mountains, some meadows and fields ripe for the harvest. He kept looking back over his shoulder, as though he were speaking to someone. He was on a journey, and he wasn’t alone. Morrigan didn’t need to see his companion to know who it must be.
So, her journey would soon begin, and she wouldn’t be traveling alone. She would have a guide. Whether or not that would be a good thing was another question best left to the cards to answer. However, the next card told her nothing she didn’t already know.
“The Moon,” she said. “Caution.”
It was a scary card. It warned of tricks and illusions. The two howling wolves that stood under the moon looked back at her menacingly, growling, showing their pointed fangs in a snarl. For the first time since she began the reading, Danu and Dagda made their presence known by lifting their heads and hissing threateningly in the direction of the beasts.
Even the cats sensed it. The journey she was about to embark on wouldn’t be all fun and family reunions. There would be obstacles and deceit, most likely from people she though could be trusted. The moon was a sign that danger was certainly awaiting her. In was an ominous omen.
“Shhhh.”
She hushed the still hissing cats, and gave them each a gentle stroke to try to settle them down, though she was far from settled herself. Again she felt the urge to stop the spread. Her instincts were telling her that no good was going to come out of this reading. That she was only going to scare herself. She should never have done it in the first place. When would she learn that sometimes it was best to just let life play out without interference or prophetic warnings? Then again, she knew that to be forewarned might be her only advantage. So with more bravery than she felt, Morrigan flipped over the final card.
“No…” she gasped when she looked down at the terrible, skeletal face. “Oh no…”
She should have known. She thought perhaps a part of her did know even before she glanced down at the gruesome scene—a skeleton with a scythe in a field of body parts. With the divination going in the direction it was, what else could be the final outcome?
“Death,” she whispered. “Death.”
She knew that in most cases, the death card was more a symbol of personal transformation than literal death. But a deeper sense of understanding told her that this time the card was meant to be taken literally. She saw only glimpses and shadows in her mind. Brief flashes of faces, some familiar, like her mother and the knight—some still strangers, like a beautiful, almost angelic blonde woman in a flowing white gown. But around them all, including herself, she saw the shadows of death. Someone would die. That was certain. Whether that person was Morrigan or someone else, neither the cards nor her sixth sense was willing to reveal.
Morrigan felt decidedly shaky as she gathered up her tarot cards. She placed them securely in the bottom of her bag just as she heard the door downstairs slam shut. The reading hadn’t made everything as crystal clear as she had hoped, but one thing was certain. She would soon be leaving on a journey—a journey that would undoubtedly end in death.

Welcome to another fabulous edition of On the Spot! I love having other bloggers join me and today I've got the fantastical Linny! You may know her, you may not. But here she is, on the spot! (Rhyme in progress)
Linny recently graduated high school and she loves anything artsy and design related. Make sure you check out her blog, she did it all! Oh and did I mention she works at an ice-cream place? I'm so jelly. She's super fun and her blog is epic! And so is this interview!
Besides a love of books, what made you want to share your reviews with others?
I want to help people. Isn't that the worst thing in the world when you waste some of your precious reading time on a book that you hated? I want to give people (who have a simular taste in books as me) a heads up of what books they should skip and what books they should use their reading time on instead.
Any books to-be-released that you are most excited for?
That list is way too long! One book I'm excited for though is Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes, which comes out this December.
Favorite books/authors?
Some
of my top favorite books/series (so you can call the authors my
favorites) are The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, The Host, Demon Kissed,
and Demon Princess.
Favorite color?
You'd probably think pink from my blog design, but it's green!
When did you really start reading a lot?
I
used to read a lot during elementary, but I stopped for a long time. I
started up again about 3 years ago in my 10th grade year of highschool.
Favorite book genres?
Anything Young Adult fiction. No realistic-fiction for me though!
If you were fictional, what character from a book would you be most like?
Well, I hopethat
I would be most like Katniss. But I would probably be more like Ivy
Taylor from Demon Kissed. Starts out ordinary and slowly grows into an
amazing MC through the story, but still makes mistakes.
Are you more prone to buy or borrow books?
Definitely
buy them. I can't stand people who dog-ear or bend pages and I don't
want to share books with those people, even if they're not really my
books haha. Plus, I can have them there for me to read whenever I want -
no waiting lists etc.
You can have any author to dinner. Who is it?
I would have dinner with Suzanne Collins and we would have lamb stew.
Favorite fictional crush?
Peeta Mellark! There are so many though, haha.
Best book quote?
There
are quite a few. Here's one that made me cry though! “It's not the
face, but the expressions on it. It's not the voice, but what you say.
It's not how you look in that body, but the thing you do with it. You
are beautiful.” -Ian O'Shea, The Host
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Telekinesis, like in the movie Chronicle.
Could you say that reading from a bloggers perspective has changed the way you read books?
The
only thing that it's changed is that I keep a notepad to write good
quotes and my ideas for my reivew on. I still think about the book the
same way, or rather I still get dragged away and am not really thinking
at all.
How did you get your current blog name?
I
wanted it to be simple and let people know that my blog was based
around a person, not a company or professional reviewing group.
If you could pick any book or series to be made into films, what would you pick?
The Demon Kissed books! An alternate ending for the 5th film required though..
Are you a Morning, Noon or Night person?
Noon.

What kind of a loaded question is that? Haha! I LOVE both, but if I had to choose I would say Hunger Games.
What do you tend to spotlight in your reviews?
I
try to cover everything, but I go more in depth about the things that
really made or ruined the book for me. Like if there was something about
the writing style that really bothered me, I'll explain what about it
got to me and give quote examples.

It's time for another fabulous blogger to join me! This time I've got the lovely Krista over from her lovely blog Nawanda Files! The only galaxy known to man that revolves around books and inhabiting by robots! Krista herself is a science nerd and is studying to become a doctor. Welcome Krista!

Besides a love of books what made you want to share your reviews w/others? Honestly, I just love the whole YA community. Sharing my reviews is awesome, but I love to interact with all the other YA bloggers and readers out there.
Favorite Books/Authors? Oooh, this is definitely a hard one. Of all time, I'd have to say the Harry Potter series. Recently, I'm really digging Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins, Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi, and The Selection by Kiera Cass.
Favorite Color? Red!
When did you start really reading a lot? When I was ten. My twin sister and I had a contest to see who could read the most in a year. We went to the library almost everyday and had a whiteboard tallying our book count and page count. We were a bit competitive :)
Favorite fictional crush? There are so many! Probably Kaidan Rowe from Sweet Evil. That book is steamy for young adult!
If you designed your own fortune cookie what would it say? Don't eat yellow snow. (Because we all know that is some sage wisdom)
Could you say that reviewing from a bloggers perspective has changed how you think about books? Not really. I'm still reviewing it like I would before I started blogging. My review just may be more in depth.
How did you get the blog name you use now? Nawanda comes from the movie Dead Poets Society. There is a character in the movie named Charlie who decides that he wants to be called Nuwanda (but I changed it to the other spelling). He's a free thinking, really independent person, and I've always valued individuality. It's my favorite movie, and my sister and I have been using the name Nawanda as screen names and such since we were kids. It just kind of seemed appropriate to name my blog after a name that kind of stands for individuality when I've always tried to be myself.
If you could pick any one book to be made into a movie what would it be? Under the Never Sky would be an epic movie.
What do you look for in a book that will go into a review? I don't know if I look for anything. I just kind of read it and if there is something that makes me laugh, smile, or cry I'll write about it. If I get irritated I'll write about that too. I'm not opposed to bad reviews as long as they are honest.
